On the surface of the human tonsil are pits called crypts. Tonsils being the lymph nodes in your throat which fight bacteria, help in filtering the lymph fluid, fight viruses and all other foreign particles that may enter the body through the mouth and nose. Tonsils bear the brunt of the fight because after the fight, bacteria, dead cells etc are left behind. These mucous, bacteria, dead cells and other materials become trapped in the crypts and after some time, this trapped material calcifies forming tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths. A number of symptoms manifest upon developing tonsil stones: Bad breath, sore throat, white debris, difficulty in swallowing, ear pain, tonsil swelling etc.
Tonsil stones are caused by poor oral hygiene that allows the bacteria in the mouth to thrive. The other known cause is allergies as the body responds to allergens as if they mean harm and that stresses the lymphatic system. The problem can also result from bacteria, or virus infections. These are the main known causes of tonsil stones.
The problem of tonsil stones can be eliminated. The most basic way is to improve your oral hygiene and adjust in diet. The advanced treatment of tonsil stones includes surgical removal of the stones by a visit to an ear, nose and throat doctor (ENTs) who will then perform a simple surgery and remove the stones. Many people, however, prefer to dislodge the tonsil stones at home with the aid of bobby pins or Q-Tips. Alternatively, some tonsil stones, especially the ones that do not manifest symptoms are innocuous and do not require any treatment.
There are home-grown solutions to deal with the discomfort accompanying tonsil stones temporarily: One is the use of antibiotics which help a bit though they do not treat the basic problem that causes tonsil stones, and they may also have a number of side effects. The other known way is to gurgle water that is warm and salty to ease the discomfort of tonsil stones.
However, the ultimate solution to tonsil stones especially to those affected by its recurrence and when it cannot be treated by antibiotics is said to be tonsillectomy. Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils. Read more on soapysue.com
